How to Not Tell a War Story is a short story collection about veterans who, though they were in a war, have no traditional war stories to tell. As they move into retirement forty years after their experience, they begin to wonder if somehow there isn’t something more to say about how their service affected their lives.
The experience of Vietnam veterans offers much to newer generations of soldiers and those who care for them. This latter group–mostly women–who attempt to integrate veterans back into civilian life are important models for the present, where a volunteer military has divided our nation into two, increasingly separate populations.
